Lesson 23 - A Day at School

                                                      Rissho University, Shinagawa Campus

Hello students and tutors,

This is a difficult blog post to write.  It is difficult to write about school life these days.  Specifically, it's difficult to write about a life that 1st year Rissho students have not experienced yet: school life at Rissho.  Because of COVID19, no one in this class has had "A Day at School" on our friendly campus.  For all of us, this school year has been spent online.  So maybe we should make a lesson called, "A Day of Online School!"

But, we can imagine.  Let's try to imagine what a school day at Rissho is like.  Let's try to imagine what a day at school will be like after COVID.  For MKD tutors, too, MKD campus life this year is not the same as it was last year, right?  In fact, most students around the world have experienced a lot of change in their daily routines.  COVID19 has affected all of us. ๐ŸŒ

Most importantly, we must look ahead.  We must think of a happier, healthier, safer future.  Let's do our best.

Below ๐Ÿ‘‡ is a photo of a happy, pre-COVID day at Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku!

And here ๐Ÿ‘‡ is a video of historical day at MKD  (2017).  Check it out.

_____________________________ Warm up _____________________________

MKD tutors: Please ask Rissho students to talk about their high school days.  For example, please ask them to describe a regular day at high school was like.

Was your high school like this?๐Ÿ‘‡...

or was high school like this?๐Ÿ‘‡...

OK, so after the warm up chat, let's go to today's lesson.  It's on Randall's ESL Lab, and the title is 'A Day at School'.  Imagine and enjoy!

Lesson 22 - Voicemail

Hi all!

For today's lesson, we're going to talk about telecommunication.

Do you know what the word telecommunication means?  Well, tele means "over a distance," so if you see a word with tele in it, it means something that is done over a distance.  And of course you know the word communication (้€šไฟก tsuushin).  So the word telecommunication is tele + communication = telecommunication, or communication over a distance.

Here are some words with tele in them:

1.๐Ÿ‘‡ telescope (to see something over a distance

2. ๐Ÿ‘‡ television (to watch something over a distance)

t

3. ๐Ÿ‘‡ telephone (to talk with someone over a distance)

4. ๐Ÿ‘‡ Teletubbies (Well, I don't know how they got their name!๐Ÿ˜‚)

and of course...

5. ๐Ÿ‘‡ telecommunication (to communicate over a distance)

By the way, telecommunication means ้›ปๆฐ—้€šไฟก (denki tsuushin) in Japanese.

___________________________________________________

Next, let's talk about what functions (ๆฉŸ่ƒฝ kinลyou have on your smartphone and your landline (ๅ›บๅฎš้›ป่ฉฑ kotei-denwa).  By the way, do you have a landline?  Some people don't use them anymore.

On your smartphone, do you have voicemail (ใƒœใ‚คใ‚นใƒกใƒผใƒซ) function?

On your landline, do you have voicemail or an answering machine (็•™ๅฎˆ็•ช้›ป่ฉฑ rusuban denwa) function?

๐Ÿ‘ˆ answering machine function on a landline

____________________________________________________________

OK, next we're going to practice listening to voicemail messages, and then we will learn how to leave messages on voicemail or on an answering machine.

MKD tutors will use this website to teach you more about telecommunication, so click ๐Ÿ‘‰ HERE.

Lesson 21 - Reporting in Class

Hello everyone!

Thank you for checking out our blog.  Today we have a fun and interactive lesson.  We are going to practice an important communication skill.  It's called Reporting in Class.  Another word for reporting is announcing, or presenting.  As you know, your teachers often ask you to report something in class.  Today's lesson is about doing just that.  Specifically, your MKD tutors will help you build your confidence to report something in class, in English.  Doesn't that sound good?  We think so ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

                               interactive: ใ‚คใƒณใ‚ฟใƒฉใ‚ฏใƒ†ใ‚ฃใƒ–

reporting, announcing, presenting: ๅ ฑๅ‘Š、็™บ่กจ、็™บ่กจ (hลkoku, happyล, happyล )

๐Ÿง  Remember: Learning involves making mistakes.  If you make a mistake, that's OK, that's normal.  Don't worry about making mistakes.

that's normal: ใใ‚Œใฏๅฝ“ใŸใ‚Šๅ‰ใฎใ“ใจใงใ™。 (sore wa atarimae desu.)

Hey!  Let's try a quick warm-up activity!...

WARM-UP: QUICK JAPAN NEWS REPORTS

Directions: As a group, MKD tutors will ask Rissho students to give 8 short news reports about Japan.  The 8 news photos below will have meaning to most Rissho students.  So, Rissho students: do your best to report to everyone the news story related to the photos below.  The basic news stories are written below each photo, but students can add their own knowledge and extra information.  Have fun! ๐Ÿ˜†

Photo 1 ๐Ÿ‘†: COVID 19 cases are still quite high in Japan, especially in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka.  New COVID cases in our country are at about one thousand. ๐Ÿ˜ท ๐Ÿฅ

Photo 2๐Ÿ‘†: Last year about this time, Japan's Emperor, Akihito abdicated.  His son, Akishino, became our new Emperor, which was a historical event that changed the Japanese era (and calendar) from the Heisei era to the current, Reiwa era.  ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ™‡

                                   abdicated: (้€€ไฝใ—ใพใ—ใŸ taii shimashita )

Photo 3๐Ÿ‘†: In September of this year, Yoshihide Suga became my country's new PM.  Former Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, resigned. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ™‡

PM: Prime Minister        resigned: ่พžไปปใ—ใŸ (jinin shita)

Photo 4๐Ÿ‘†: Due to the pandemic, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were cancelled ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ…

Photo 5๐Ÿ‘†: Recently, the Japanese court system decided that tattoo artists do not need a medical license to give tattoos; therefore, this decision basically legalizes tattooing in Japan.  MKD tutors, do you want to get a permanent omiyage (souvenir) in Japan? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’˜

                                          permanent: ๆถˆๅŽปไธๅฏ (shลkyo-fuka), ๆ’ไน… (kลkyลซ)

Photo 6๐Ÿ‘†: Sadly, in September of this year, Japanese actress, Yuko Takeuchi (40) died.  She was too young!  ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ญ

Photo 7๐Ÿ‘†: Recently, Japan food makers are producing more and more non-meat items.  At 7-11, you can buy meatless taco meat. Nippon Ham now makes meat-free soy ham, and Otsuka company makes a meat alternative called ZEROMEAT.  This is great news for vegetarians (and animals๐Ÿ˜‰) and is a good thing for the global environment.  ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ‘ผ

Photo 8๐Ÿ‘†: This is Rissho news!  As we speak, Rissho University is having a new building built.  It's going to be called Building 12, and it's gonna be amazing!

                                                                                ๐Ÿ“ฐ๐Ÿ—ž

Well, now that you have practiced reporting, let's move on to today's lesson.  Here we go...

Philippines + Japan: A Story of Friendship

Last week, (during Mike's Online English lesson,) Kurt talked about his memories of a Rissho student who visited MKD two years ago.  The student's name is Taisei Nagai, who is now a 3rd-year Kokusai Course student.  At the time Taisei visited the Philippines, he was a 1st-year student just like you!  Kurt, Maffy, Rona, Nathalie, and other MKD tutors and students met this adventurous student, and they all became friends.  Of course, they first met online during the Online English lessons, but they met each other in person in Davao City (at MKD) in 2018.  They now share true friendship and have made lifelong memories.  ๐Ÿ‘
     adventurous: ๅ†’้™บ็š„ bลken-teki

Kurt sent the photos below, and we decided to post them on this blog.  These photos give you an idea of how fun it is in the Philippines ๐Ÿ˜€, and how wonderful the city and people of Davao really are.  Next, we are going to hear from the tutors and from Taisei about their friendship and their memories.

Lesson 18 - Making a Reservation at a Hotel

Hi students!

First, let's cover some key vocabulary.

Instructions: MKD tutors, please cover the 6 vocabulary items below.  Practice pronunciation, meaning (Japanese & English) and synonyms.

        1. lodging: ๅฎฟๆณŠ shukuhaku a place to sleep for the night, hotel, room

        2. specifically: ๅ…ทไฝ“็š„ใซใฏ gutaitekini wa exactly, especially, particularly

        3. accommodation/s: ๅฎฟๆณŠๆ–ฝ่จญ shukuhaku shisetsu hotel, inn, room

        4. book a room: ้ƒจๅฑ‹ใ‚’ไบˆ็ด„ใ™ใ‚‹heya wo yoyaku suru reserve a room, make a room reservation

        5. inn: ๅฎฟ yado hotel, lodge, hostel

        6. typically: ้€šๅธธ tsลซjล usually, commonly, often

Today we are are going to talk about lodging.  We will practice making reservations, specifically, hotel reservations.  But, before we start, let’s talk about some of the ways young people book a room for the night.  Let’s compare what accommodation options young people in the Philippines have, and what young Japanese people have.  What seems clear is that young travelers from all over the world have at least one thing in common, and that is their smartphones!  Of course, booking a room anywhere in the world can be done on any smartphone, anytime!

In the US and Europe, young travelers (especially students) want to get the cheapest lodging possible.  And so young Americans and Europeans typically stay at the following places ๐Ÿ‘‡

Instructions: MKD tutors, please ask Rissho students to read each of the 6 following accommodation options.  Briefly talk about each type of lodging.  Do you have these lodging options in the Philippines?Japan?  What do you think about them?

1. AirBnB: AirBnB is a global app for finding places to stay the night.  Often, people can reserve AirBnB rooms much cheaper than they can at traditional hotels.

2. youth hostel: Hostelling International has a long history of providing low-cost accommodations around the world.  There is a Hostelling International Japan organization, and there are youth hostels in the Philippines, too (click here).  To book a room or a bed at a hostel, you may need to become a Hostelling International member.  Some hostels ask you to bring your own bedsheets, too.  Hostels are great places to meet new friends from all over the world.

3. guest house: In Japan, in recent years, guest houses have become very popular.  They are all over Japan and all over the world.  For example, there is one very nice (and cheap) guest house in Kamakura called Kamejikan.  The Japanese owner--Sakurai San--was a global backpacker when he was young, and opened Kamejikan about 15 years ago.  Sakurai San welcomes travelers from all over the world.  When you visit Kamakura, please try to stay with Sakurai San.

 ๐Ÿ‘ˆ Sakurai San

4. backpacker lodge: There are many backpacker lodges all over the world and they are similar to youth hostels.  Backpacker lodges are very popular with young travelers in Southeast Asia.  They are much cheaper than hotels, and they are great places to meet other young travelers.  Backpacker lodges also offer various tours and activities.  They are cheap and fun.

5. YMCA: Everybody knows the famous "YMCA" song, and maybe Kurt can sing it for you ๐Ÿ˜, but did you know it's fun to stay at a YMCA in Japan, Philippines, and all over the world...?  Check out their Japan English website here or their Japanese website here.

6. couch surfing: Couch surfing is maybe not for everybody, but it is a very cheap lodging option.  In fact, it's free!  A couch is another word for sofa, and "surfing" means to do something for free.  So basically, when you "couch surf," you sleep on the sofas of strangers for FREE!  Of course, the strangers may become your friends.  And of course, you can offer your couch to strangers, too.  It sounds scary, but young people actually do it!  There is a website here if you want to find out more about couch surfing.  Or here is a fun video of a young couple couch surfing in Kumamoto here.

Ok... next, let's go on to today's lesson.

This is Lesson 18 - Making a Reservation at a Hotel ๐Ÿ‘‰ here.

ENJOY!
